Sphagnum Quinquefarium
Sphagnum quinquefarium (Live Inoculum)
Morphology & Diagnosis: A species within the Acutifolia section, named for its defining taxonomic trait (quinquefarium): the arrangement of branch phyllids in five distinct vertical rows (five-ranked). Another unique diagnostic feature is the architecture of its fascicles, which typically comprise three spreading branches instead of the standard two found in related species.
Ecology & Habit: Unlike open bog species, this bryophyte is preferentially sylvatic and sciophilous (shade-loving). It thrives on moist mineral soils, rocky slopes, and under the canopy of coniferous forests in montane regions. It is a rare species in trade due to its specific habitat requirements.
Chromatism: It exhibits a broad phenotypic range. While shade forms are pale green or yellowish (xanthophyllous), under suitable conditions, it develops secondary pigments resulting in pink, bright red, or vinaceous coloration, aiding in its visual identification in situ.
